Never Again

Day 10 of April P-A-D Prompt:  "Never again....)

He pushed from the table,
No chips to cash in,
Walked toward the door
Saying never again...

With paycheck all gone
How could he explain
To his wife and his kids
That he knew he would win...

Filled with remorse
He walked toward the car,
But stopped when he saw
Something green near his door.

Three gorgeous green bills
Worth one hundred each,
A bit of salvation
Placed within reach.

With bills in his pocket
And hopeful once more
He let foolish hope
Take him back in the door.

Forgetting his promise
Of never again,
He asked for more chips
Knowing this time he'd win.

  1. We all have our 'never again' moments... they don't usually last long...

  2. Addiction, regardless of the drug, is never pretty. And not just the junkie suffers. Solid write, Gloria.

  3. What a shame he hadn't driven home before finding the money. I have a friend who left her husband with only the clothes she stood up in and her 4 children, after the so and so cleaned them out one time too many.

  4. Phew, they say that gamblers are never really happy until they've lost everything.

Enjoyed reading this, in fact I sang it all the way through!!

  5. Gloria, when I visited Las Vegas, one of the most disheartening things I witnessed were the people gambling day and night, but the Grand Caynon was heaven. You described the addiction quite well.

  8. I so wanted him to get in the car. I felt his family's despair.

  9. Nicely done. I wanted him to drive away - "hopeful" in one line, but then "foolish" the next.
